Introduction into methods of Strategic Foresight and Scenario Planning

The German Federal Foreign Office trains its future diplomats at the Foreign Service Academy in Berlin-Tegel. In the fourteen-months preparation course, Germany’s future diplomats are being trained for the complexities of world politics. Since 2016 the Bureau fuer Zeitgeschehen (BfZ) holds a one-day workshop to familiarize the Attachés with methods of Strategic Foresight and Scenario Planning.

Development of country scenarios

The workshop deals with the theoretical basics of strategic foresight. In a second step the participants elaborate future scenarios for selected countries through the identification of stakeholders, trends and drivers. The scenarios demonstrate that strategic foresight could help policy makers to improve anticipatory governance and crisis prevention.
